For the birds

Indian summer days are upon us in northern Ca. it is hotter now than it was all summer. Yesterday I went for a walk down by the marina and through the bird reserve. There are many a Canadian goose laying over for winter, they are either tired of the long commute south or are wounded in some way. I miss watching the geese fly over in the V formation something I use to do in Michigan. It was something as a child I would always pause at and say a prayer I can remember it so clearly the overcast skies, the honking geese and a prayer of safe journeys. This day was bright and sunny and the birds were busy singing and feeding. I just wandered from pond to pond enjoying the late October light. It is so low in the sky and so warm, everything feels golden, weeds even look special in the light. It was a beautiful walk. I hope you are all enjoying the October light in your neck of the woods.

  1. Yes the light here is beautiful this time of year... And ponds are drying up so many different wading and shore birds congregate to feed... Woodstorks and Roseate Spoonbills in the deeper ones and Black-necked Stilts and other shore birds in the shallower locations... Egrets and Herons aren't particular... they are everywhere... Migrating Kestrels and Kingfishers are starting to show up on the utility wires too... I love autumn...

  4. Thanks for your sweet comments on my haiku post... My knowledge of flora and fauna comes from a lifetime of loving, working in (and for) and learning about nature... mostly here in Florida, but some of that (like birds) can be transferable to other areas. I have shelves of field guides and have spent many, many hours in the field with biologists and land managers (neither of which I am). Field guides are a wonderful way to learn who's who and what's what... It's amazing what you can learn from a $10 book of pictures!

  5. Sounds like you had a lovely walk! I am also enjoying the October weather. It's still not too cool, but we are supposed to get cooler and maybe rain next week. That's funny, I look at the weeds too, it seems they are often pretty in a photograph. :-)
