The trail revisited

Labor Day week-end was spent on the ridge, up in the mountains away from it all. I like to think that I get away from it except that my husband has a tv antenna, gets reception and watches the evening news. I try not to pay attention because there is little positive in the world these days, 9/11 anniversary, unemployment at 9%, flooding and drought, fighting in the government. Being in a little trailer I was unable to get away from the depressing broadcast, and it made me afraid and sad. I got to spend time on my favorite forest trail, taking in flowers, fresh scents, sun on my back, sweat on my brow and for a while everything was ok. Nothing is wrong in my world, I have much to be grateful for, I just wish I could spread it around. It is difficult to live in these troubled times.

  1. Cheer me ups:
    Sweet dog's faces
the generous giving in people's hearts when catastrophe strikes
animals brought back from the brink of extinction
    baseball games
    Redwood forests
    Free entrance day at museums
and I saved the best for last,
    homemade pie.

  2. Oh, I completely relate to the news making you feel sad... but I'm so glad you got to visit your lovely mountain trail again. It reminds me of that poem by Wendell Berry:

    THE PEACE OF WILD THINGS

When despair for the world grows in me

and I wake in the night at the least sound

in fear of what my life and my children's lives may be,

I go and lie down where the wood drake

rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds.

I come into the peace of wild things

who do not tax their lives with forethought

of grief. I come into the presence of still water.

And I feel above me the day-blind stars

waiting with their light. For a time

I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.

    — Wendell Berry

  3. Yes it is very difficult to live in these times... but we all do have things to be grateful for... and you do spread it around, just by posting your wonderful photos and being here with us... Try to cheer up my friend... and live in the present. It's what I've been striving to do and it helps to keep my mind off the bad things.

  4. Something I get in my email from Katherine Treffinger (www.ourlivingdream.blogspot.com):
"As we awaken to the truth of who we are, we awaken for all. The entire collective consciousness makes a shift when one person makes a shift toward Truth". Enjoy!

  6. I agree that there is much in the world to be saddened by and afraid of, but that is what makes getting away and just being yourself somewhere peaceful so important. Glad you got away from it all like this.
I have to comment on your dog in the rucksack-how sweet! Do you go far like that?

  7. Oh I know what you mean about these troubled times, sometimes I can barely watch the news for fear of what is happening next. I worry for the future of my children.
Glad you managed to get away to the mountains. Your photos are spectacular as always. And is your little dog in a rucksack?! How sweet!

  9. We do live in difficult times. Thanks for your photos of your hikes and beautiful scenery, Lorrie. Thanks, Julie, for the need to have a list of "cheer me ups" and Leslie for your posting Wendell Berry's poem. What I love about Lorrie's blog are her thought provoking posts and the disussion they stimulate.

  11. I know just what you mean! It's hard to get away, but then I remind myself that the news only usually broadcasts the bad stuff and that truly, as you look around, bad stuff is very much in the minority. All is well... Love, Silke
