Flea Market

No farmers market today. This morning I got up and went to the Alameda Flea market. It meets the first Sunday of every month, and has over 800 dealers. Items need to be at least 20 years old or they are not allowed to be sold at the market. I've been meaning to go to this market for months but have never made it well today was the day. I arrived with a whole 35 dollars burning a hole in my pocket and much determination. It was a cloudy, windy and cool day but I did not let that stop me. What stopped me was the size!! It was huge and went on and on. I was overwhelmed, I wandered around rather stunned looking at things, touching things and wanting what everyone else had in their hands. I bought my self a cup of coffee tried to unthaw the chill that had set in and attempted to conquer the market. I soon realized that I needed to dress warmer, and have more money. I consider this a trial run, just a warm up to check out the lay of the land. I plan to return next month. The shock to my system will be gone, my pockets will be richer but the determination will be the same.

  1. Poor Lorrie! Big flea markets can be overwhelming! But you know, you don't have to look at everything, just let serendipity guide you! I wish I could visit that flea market with you, it looks intriguing! But I think you are working on the right strategy and next time will be better!!

  3. Yes, those huge flea markets can be daunting at first, but with a canteen and compass next time, you'll be sure to conquer the new territory! Wish there were more flea markets in Vegas, I'd love to spend some money on fun vintage pretties!

  5. Lorrie, I get very overwhelmed like you when I go, and today I went also, and got lost in one 20'x10' vendor display!

  6. Hi my friend! So many posts to catch up on! First let me say, I am praying for good things to come your way. I know things are not perfect, but you are finding the trick to living life and that trick is taking stock of what you DO have to be thankful for and to look forward to what is yet to come. Patience and optimism are my two weakest traits in my own life, but I abound in them in other people's lives. So, I know it is rough. I don't think there is anyone that isn't touched by a job loss or income loss or having to tighten the purse strings. We will someday look back at these times, as our parents have had to do since it seems every lifetime has its rough spots, and realize how strong we grew from our perserverance and how smart we became in making the choices needed to survive.

On another note, I live about a mile from the Rose Bowl flea market and I have the same problem - get so overwhelmed I end up not buying anything, come home, and wish I had so go back the next month and can't find what I should've bought the month before and get overwhelmed all over again! Ah well, there are worse ways to spend one's time.

Your new piece below, collaborating with hubby, is spectacular. That intricate little blue beading - wow! It is beautiful!

I'm still a few days away from home so if I don't get back by until then, I'll get all caught up next week. Hope you have lots of blessings this week!
