I've had a couple of days off of work and so I've been busy in the crafting department. I wanted to try something new for the background for my fabric pieces. I thought of mosaic, I went to TJMAX and bought inexpensive plates. The hard part was taking a hammer to them and breaking them. I thought it would be fun-taking out all of my pent up frustration and releasing it. But I found it very difficult. Either I have little frustration( I don't think that is the case) or I am very uptight( I think that is more likely). Anyway I found the exercise exhausting and irritating. I did buy more plates and hope to try it again. I think I need to loosen up a bit. Mosaic work was a bit of a challenge for me, the grout work was messy and time consuming, my husband helped me with it. But in the end, I like the texture of the glossy hard finish against the soft of the fabric. So I will be trying it again and with my husbands help will conquer it.
Isn't is surprising how hard it is to let all the pent up emotions out? We learn so well to keep everything hidden and under control, that it becomes so difficult to let loose.
ReplyDeleteLooks like you are making one very special piece, Lorrie, and I can't wait to see it finished!!!
I can relate to that...I know I would have had a hard time breaking the plates myself! I recently purchased some old costume jewelry really cheap with the intention of taking it apart to use in my art...well I've decided I really like them as they are and want to wear them...so I need to find stuff that is already broken!
ReplyDeleteLorrie,
ReplyDeleteMosaic ware is one of the most wonderful of crafts. I thought those plates were old. really, they are perfect for the linen and silver button. I like the way you are stamping on the fabric too. Very lovely work.
wow - I'm liking what I see - can't wait to see the finished product and I love that you're stepping outside the box!
ReplyDeletehey baby...congrads on the new project...right up my alley you know...it forces another level of acceptance i think....i love that you are enjoying the outcome...i ofcourse love your photos...i think some photography classes are in my future...if i were not afraid...
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea- the softness of your textiles against the beautiful mosaic background gives a very old, French look. I think it would be hard to smash those plates, too.
ReplyDeleteThis is looking great! I love that mosaic idea. And keep smashing those dishes - you'll get the hang of it...;) In Germany, you bring old dishes to the party before the wedding (the night before the wedding day) and at the end of the evening, everyone breaks dishes for good luck for the couple! Apropos that I am reading this just hours before I am going to attend my nieces wedding... Hugs, Silke
ReplyDeleteI think you are just too nice to hurt anything, even a dish! Can't wait to see the finished piece - it's looking fabulous!
